How the converter works
Each unit has one fixed factor. For volume the factor is its size in milliliters. For weight it is its size in grams. The converter multiplies your amount by the factor of the unit you have and divides by the factor of the unit you want.
result = amount × factor of the unit you have ÷ factor of the unit you want
For 2 cups in tablespoons that is 2 × 236.588 ÷ 14.787 = 32 tablespoons. Results of 100 or more show one decimal place, results from 1 to 100 show two, and smaller results show three.

Ounces, pounds and grams
The weight tab uses 28.3495 g per ounce and 453.592 g per pound. These are ounces of weight. A fluid ounce is a volume and belongs on the volume tab.

|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 28.35 g | 0.063 lb |
| 2 oz | 56.7 g | 0.125 lb |

Oven temperatures and gas marks
Fahrenheit to Celsius is (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Gas marks rise in steps of 25 °F, with Gas 1 at 275 °F. The converter uses °F = 250 + 25 × gas mark for Gas 1 and above. Oven dials and cookbooks round the Celsius figures, usually to the nearest 10.
| Gas mark | Fahrenheit | Celsius, to the nearest degree |
|---|---|---|
| Gas 1 | 275 °F | 135 °C |
| Gas 2 | 300 °F | 149 °C |
| Gas 3 | 325 °F | 163 °C |
| Gas 4 | 350 °F | 177 °C |
| Gas 5 | 375 °F | 191 °C |
| Gas 6 | 400 °F | 204 °C |
| Gas 7 | 425 °F | 218 °C |
| Gas 8 | 450 °F | 232 °C |
| Gas 9 | 475 °F | 246 °C |
Volume is not weight
This page converts volume to volume and weight to weight. It cannot turn cups into grams, because a cup of flour and a cup of honey do not weigh the same. That conversion needs the ingredient. Use the cups to grams converter for 35 ingredients, or the cups to ounces page for ounces by ingredient.
